Synopsis
At the end of his life, Matthias finds comfort in the affection of the young Inken.
But their moments of happiness awaken the hatred of his own children, who see Inken as a threat to their inheritance.
Behind laughter and false kindness, they undermine the old man's trust and joy.
Inken tries in vain to defend their love.
Under the weight of malice, Matthias dies, leaving Inken alone — beneath the final glimmers of the day.
